"...an emerging rule of thumb that suggests that if you get a group of 100 people online then one will create content, 10 will "interact" with it (commenting or offering improvements) and the other 89 will just view it." I kinda want to say "duh," but it's so relevant.
“one will create content, 10 will 'interact' with it"
That's probably optimistic. Probably more like 0.1% will provide content and 1% will interact. I heard somewhere that only 2% of listeners to talk radio ever call into a show. Not sure reponse in blogsphere is much better.
Interesting you mention radio John. I've never had a desire to call into radio shows... My thoughts always get in the way of my speaking. I'm always a couple steps ahead of my mouth and end up stammering or just not articulating a thought as well as it sounded in my mind. Knowing that, I'm somewhat affraid of a professional speaker, with a radio voice, contrasting with my poor skills and proclivity for yammering. Plus radio is SOOO 1948.
You may also be right that the proportion is even less than 1% given that bloggers are also the most active commenters. If bloggers were radio hosts, it would be as if all the radio hosts called each other up rather than going to the phones.
Be careful. The radio medium of 1948 is so 1948. Radio, reinvented for 2006 is so 2006. Rush Limbaugh whether you like him or not, has an audience of 14.75 million daily. Even Mike Gallagher, who I can say I knew when he was a lowly person in Greenville, has a daily audience of 3.5 million. And these guys are making rock star amounts of money.
